Nourishing Life: A Comprehensive Approach to Health and Well-Being in the Swallowing and Nutrition Unit
We promote healthy and safe eating for people with swallowing and nutrition disorders, improving their quality of life through the Swallowing and Nutrition Unit.
Through the Swallowing and Nutrition Unit, we address eating and swallowing disorders in people with multiple disabilities, prioritizing a comprehensive clinical assessment, nutritional advice and preparation of personalized diets. This project seeks to improve people's health and quality of life, reducing problems arising from eating and swallowing disorders. The project responds to the critical need for support for people with swallowing and nutrition disorders, especially those with neurodevelopmental disorders, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities. These conditions can lead to serious feeding, swallowing and nutrition problems, affecting health and quality of life. Through comprehensive care, we aim to avoid complications such as bronchoaspiration, malnutrition and other associated health problems.
Targets
1. Carry out a comprehensive clinical assessment of food, swallowing and nutritional status.
2. Advise and provide personalized nutritional recommendations.
3. Improve comfort and safety in the act of feeding and swallowing.
4. Reduce the risks of bronchoaspiration and other respiratory problems.
5. Provide support and training to families and caregivers.
6. Assess and monitor the improvement of patients' health and quality of life.
Approach and strategies
The approach is based on interdisciplinary care, which combines assessment by a team of professionals specialized in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing, nutritional advice and therapeutic intervention. Strategies include personalizing treatment plans, modifying food textures and compositions, and collaborating with other medical and health services.
Planned activities
1. Initial clinical assessment of each person.
2. Nutritional advice and preparation of personalized diets.
3. Therapeutic intervention sessions to improve swallowing and feeding.
4. Training and support for families and carers.
5. Regular follow-up to evaluate the evolution and adjust the treatment according to the patient's needs.
Expected benefits
In the short term, we hope to improve comfort and safety in feeding and swallowing for patients. In the medium term, we aim to reduce the risks of health complications associated with swallowing and nutrition disorders. In the long term, we aspire to improve the overall quality of life for people and their families, reducing the need for more invasive treatments and the burden on the health system. At community level, the project will contribute to better inclusion and support for people with functional diversity, promoting a more equitable and understanding society.
