Petit Aspace: a new model of comprehensive care for children with high neurological complexity, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities

The Aspace Catalunya Foundation has launched Petit Aspace, the first day hospital specializing in children aged 0 to 3 years with high neurological complexity, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities. This new service, unique in Catalonia and a pioneer on a supraterritorial scale, offers multidisciplinary care that integrates specialized medical treatments, intensive rehabilitation and psychosocial support, with the aim of improving the quality of life of children and their families.

By 2023, there were more than 36.000 children under 15 with a recognized disability, and of these, a large proportion need intensive and specialized care that often cannot be provided in a coordinated manner in mainstream services. Petit Aspace was born to cover this lack, offering a specific and innovative response to the needs of highly complex children and their families. During the first years of life, when the neuroplasticity of the brain is at its maximum, early and targeted intensive health interventions can have a decisive impact on the development of the baby.

Together with CatSalut and with the support of the Department of Social Rights and Inclusion, the Petit Aspace Day Hospital is positioned as an intensive healthcare service of supraterritorial reference for the care of young children with highly complex needs.

A model of coordinated and specialized care

Petit Aspace's service includes a comprehensive approach that combines neurology, neuropaediatrics, psychology, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nursing care, among other disciplines, to respond to the health requirements of children with multiple needs. Our team works in a multidisciplinary manner to develop intensive, personalized and coordinated therapeutic plans with the rest of the health professionals in the public network, with pediatric primary care, referral hospitals and centers for child development and early care.

Intensive healthcare specialized in high complexity, a supraterritorial service.

One of the main strengths of Petit Aspace is specialized health care, thanks to the constant active collaboration with the health network, Petit Aspace ensures comprehensive and coordinated care, offering a more intensive level of intervention, in cases high neurological complexity. This specialization allows a clinical intervention that favors the neurological, functional and social development of babies, maximizing the results of stable and integrated care.

The supraterritorial nature of the service allows children from different regions of Catalonia to access treatments that cannot be offered in other areas. This specialized care helps to avoid the "pilgrimage" that many families have to make to obtain the resources they need.

Petit Aspace provides a highly specialized service, with a clinical and health approach that complements and reinforces community care.

With this collaboration, an ecosystem is generated where all services add up to offer the best possible care to babies and their families. Petit Aspace makes it possible to complement the service with a level of specialized intensive and health care that optimizes resources and offers solutions for the most complex cases.

Innovation and excellence in pediatric care

The Petit Aspace spaces have been designed with a therapeutic and comfort approach for families. The center has specialized rehabilitation areas, therapeutic and sensory play spaces that help promote the neurological and emotional development of babies. In addition, rest areas have been enabled for families, offering an environment that invites them to participate actively in the therapeutic process.
