Aspace has just published the study in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, a journal of great international impact and which is in the first quartile.
This past June, the article of the study that was carried out at the Fundació Aspace Catalunya in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences Blanquerna-Universitat Ramon Llull, on the application of shock waves, was published compared to botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of spasticity in patients with cerebral palsy. 70 patients from our organization participated in the study.
The results we obtained were that all patients treated with shock waves improved both in muscle extensibility and in the stretch reflexes of the analyzed muscles, with better immediate effects than those of botulinum toxin type A, maintaining its effect up to 3 months where no differences in results were seen between both therapies. On the other hand, patients showed better pain tolerance and a better experience with shock wave treatment.
These results indicate that the injection of botulinum toxin type A was not superior to the application of shock waves in the treatment of plantar flexor muscle spasticity in the patients who participated in the study.
Together with data from other published studies, we can say that shock waves can be a non-pharmacological and non-invasive treatment alternative in the management of spasticity.
Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine is an international open access journal where we can find original articles, reviews, case reports and short communications, among others, related to physical medicine and rehabilitation. Its impact index is in the first quartile. The quartile is an indicator used to evaluate the importance of a journal within the total of journals in its area, placing the journals with the greatest impact in the first quartile.
This publication in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine confirms that we are working in the right direction and gives us a lot of impetus to continue to drive research in this area.
