"No mires a otro lado" is the motto chosen for the World Cerebral Palsy Day Congress 2018, which will be held on October 5 and 6 in Lekaroz (Navarre).
The slogan refers to the sexuality and affectivity of people with cerebral palsy; a taboo reality that families and professionals face every day and that is not addressed because it is easier to look the other way and act as if it does not exist. Sexuality and affectivity will therefore be one of the main protagonists in the Congress, with the aim of empowering people with cerebral palsy to exercise their right to full sexuality. Reinforcing this idea, "Don't look away" will be accompanied by the hashtag #MiraDeFrente; which we will use in all communications on social networks carried out during World Cerebral Palsy Day (October 6) and during the 2018 Congress.
Sexuality and affectivity is one of the topics that generates the most interest among people with cerebral palsy in our organizations and is being a prominent line of work in the ASPACE Movement this year. As a result of the collaboration between professionals, families and people with cerebral palsy, we have launched a sexual affective intervention plan for the entities of the ASPACE Active Citizenship Network and we have created a working group with experts in sexuality and affectivity , that a new ASPACE guide will be published collecting these contents.
The World Cerebral Palsy Day Congress will also deal with care in the rural environment. People with cerebral palsy need local services focused on our needs to develop our life projects. This care model should offer regardless of the place of residence of the users but, when we approach the rural environment, we find situations of isolation, family overload and poverty. In short, people at risk of social exclusion without access to the care they need to live in rural areas.
With the World Cerebral Palsy Day Congress 2018 we want to highlight this reality to claim the right to live in accessible spaces designed for everyone; no matter where we live. That is why the Congress will take place in the rural environment of Lekaroz, a Navarrese town in the Vall del Baztán region, which will bring us closer and put us in a situation of the reality of the rural environment and verify that our participation in society is also possible in this type of medium.
