THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CARE

For World Cerebral Palsy Day, the Aspace Catalunya Foundation wanted to go deeper with early attention

Cerebral palsy is a group of non-progressive disorders that affect motor development, tone, posture, and where speech and other body functions can be affected, limiting activities of daily life. These disorders are the result of an injury produced during the period of brain development of the child. According to one study carried out by the Catalan Health Service. Federation of Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Disabilities of Catalonia (FEPCCAT) and Fundació ASPACE Catalunya, in our territory we find 20.000 cases of people with cerebral palsy. The prevalence rate in the child population ranges between 2 and 4,7 cases per 1.000 inhabitants. However, it should be noted that the scientific community recognizes that the detection of cerebral palsy in many cases is late, which is why we continue to work to improve early diagnosis.

It should be noted that early care is a comprehensive approach that involves identifying and intervening in developmental problems immediately after birth or as soon as they are detected. This involves including psychology, speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other services aimed at helping children and their families, to improve their skills and the goals that have been set together.

Professionals from the Neuropaediatrics Service of the Aspace Catalunya Foundation have explained how they provide early care at the Foundation and the benefits they bring to children with cerebral palsy.

La Dr. Lydia Alejandra Vargas Salazar note that: "at the Aspace Catalunya Foundation we believe that detection and prevention are essential for monitoring children throughout the first five years of life in all environments: health, social and educational".

In short, it is essential for the future development of children because it is the stage where the maturity of the brain continues to evolve and, therefore, early diagnosis and intervention is essential to be able to work on the child's abilities and resources and be able affect their future learning in the motor, educational and social spheres.

La Ms. Sonia De Abril Fernández has commented on the importance of the approach of a multidisciplinary team that draws up an individualized therapeutic plan, in order to determine which follow-up planning, assessment and complementary tests will have to be carried out throughout the treatment process.

The Aspace Catalunya Foundation provides continuous support to families from the first moment they receive the diagnosis and throughout the therapeutic process. "From Aspace we consider that this support must be multidisciplinary because we know that this model decreases the risk factors and increases the protective factors" explained the Dr. Gabriela Ganc Zaslavsky.

On World Cerebral Palsy Day from the Aspace Catalunya Foundation we want to express the importance of early attention in treatment, and the improvement of the quality of life of people who suffer from this neuromotor condition.
