Under the motto #UnFuturoMejor, today, World Cerebral Palsy Day is celebrated with the aim of raising awareness and informing society about the reality and needs of people with cerebral palsy
This year the need to build a future is highlighted, where a new social construction is carried out, fairer, more inclusive and with more spaces for participation, appealing to the opportunity to build this new society together from the social approach of rights, so that all people can participate equally.
The situation caused by the Covid-19 has left a decrease in the quality of life, in social participation and in the exercise of their rights, as well as in the resources of the entities that need more support to continue acting. With this, the pandemic leaves a scenario of greater risk for the attention and greater vulnerability of the group and their relatives.
During the Covid-19 crisis, the entities of the ASPACE Movement have demonstrated our ability to respond to difficulties, the main concern being people and social commitment.
Cerebral palsy is a disability produced by an injury to the brain that in 94% of cases takes place during childbirth or pregnancy. According to data from the ASPACE Catalunya Foundation, the remaining 6% respond to a paralysis that occurs as a result of an accident, trauma or illness.
It is important to know that cerebral palsy cannot be cured. However, the symptoms associated with this disability can be treated from different areas. That's why we work from the point of view of comprehensive care throughout the life cycle of people with cerebral palsy, offering a portfolio of essential services adjusted to people's needs and sustainability criteria.
Today, 17 million people live with cerebral palsy worldwide - 120.000 in Spain and more than 11.000 people live in Catalonia.
According to the latest data from the Generalitat de Catalunya for all diagnoses of cerebral palsy (G80) according to CIM-10 and IDESCAT:
- 10% of people with cerebral palsy are under the age of 18.
- 24% are between 18 and 45 years old.
- More than 33% are older than 65 and are the people most in need of support.
- 2 out of 3 have mobility problems (60,6%) and 3 out of 4 have problems communicating (76,8%).
- 80% have great support needs and face them with the sole help of their families and the associative network and entities providing essential services.
In terms of gender, 58% are men and 7% are women.
No two people with cerebral palsy are the same, meaning that some people will live quite independently, while others will require support from third parties for most of their daily tasks.
Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day! Today, more than ever, help us make visible the people with cerebral palsy who live throughout Catalonia and the state, and who claim a better future.
