Practical training in IDDSI textures to ensure food safety for students with dysphagia

The Aspace Catalunya Foundation has carried out a practical workshop focused on the application of the IDDSI system (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative), with the aim of reinforcing the commitment of its multidisciplinary team to the health and well-being of people with dysphagia.

Towards a safer and more inclusive food supply

In the context of the Special Education School and the Day Hospital, ensuring safe nutrition is an essential priority. For this reason, the team of speech therapists has promoted experiential training aimed at all professionals involved in the direct care of students. This initiative seeks to ensure the correct use of the international standards of textures and viscosities IDDSI, which aim to avoid risks during swallowing and promote effective and dignified nutrition.

The IDDSI classification offers a clear and agreed-upon guide to adapting foods and liquids to each person's capabilities, which directly affects their quality of life. Through protocols such as the Flow Test and the Fork Test, the workshop has allowed different textures to be validated using common foods, thus facilitating their application in the day-to-day life of the centers.

A transformative experience for professionals and users

During the training session, the professionals not only acquired technical knowledge, but also personally experienced the difficulties associated with dysphagia. This experience was key to raising the team's awareness of the importance of a careful and empathetic approach to the act of eating.

Correctly applying the IDDSI system is not only a matter of health safety. It also represents a step forward in person-centered care, promoting inclusion, educational development and autonomy for students with special needs.

With this training, the Foundation reaffirms its commitment to healthcare and educational excellence, committed to a model where safety, dignity and empathy are fundamental pillars.
