8M: visible, heard and with rights

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Aspace Catalunya Foundation joins the campaign “My rights, my voice”, promoted by the Catalan Federation of Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Disabilities (FEPCCAT), with the aim of to make visible the rights and demands of women and girls with disabilities.

Women and girls with complex neurodevelopmental disorders, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities They often face situations of multiple discrimination. In addition to gender inequality, there are barriers linked to disability, which can affect areas as essential as health, personal autonomy, social participation or making decisions about one's own life.

This reality highlights the need to incorporate a intersectional and feminist perspective in public policies and social action, in order to guarantee a real equality of rights and opportunities for all women, also for those who need more support in their day to day lives.

As part of the campaign, several women and girls linked to the cerebral palsy movement are participating by sharing their experiences and reflections. Through their voices, the aim is to to highlight the rights violations that still occur and claim fundamental aspects such as right to life, to health and to receive dignified and accessible care, recognized in the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

At the Aspace Catalunya Foundation we work every day to defend the rights, autonomy and quality of life of people with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities, and especially to ensure that women and girls in the group can express their voice, participate in society and decide about their own lives.

The group we often serve has an added difficulty when it comes to exercising and asserting their rights. Many people they communicate using augmentative and alternative communication systems (SAAC), and this can make it difficult for them to clearly express what they want and need, especially in situations of demand or complaint. That is why It is essential to guarantee safe environments and accessible channels of listening and support, so that their voice is heard and respected.

This 8M we demand a society more fair, inclusive and accessible, where all women, regardless of their support needs, can fully exercise their rights.
