Participation of the Aspace Catalunya Foundation in the world congress of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ispmr)
From June 5 to 8 in the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, the 17th world congress of the ISPMR (International Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) was held, focused on the new perspectives in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to address the challenges presented in the field of health at a global level.
The ASPACE Catalunya Foundation participated with an oral communication on the effectiveness of shock waves in the local treatment of hypertension in patients with cerebral palsy.
Dr. Antony Duttine, PAHO/WHO Advisor on Disability and Rehabilitation, highlighted that recently, on May 27, 2023, the World Health Organization reached a historic agreement to strengthen universal access to rehabilitation in health systems and to create greater awareness of national priorities in research, treatment and prevention, with improvements in technology, coverage and funding.
On the other hand, Dr. Walter Frontera, from the University of Puerto Rico, commented that, faced with the aging of the world's population, rehabilitation and exercise are necessary for the prevention and treatment of processes such as sarcopenia, gait disorders and balance, osteoporosis, etc. and that it is necessary to adopt a comprehensive approach and emphasize the need to invest resources in research and technology at a global level.
Likewise, Dr. Stefano Negrini, professor at the Rehabilitation Service of the University of Milan, spoke about rehabilitation research guidelines and the production of scientific evidence, redefining proposals, recommending guidelines for randomized clinical trials in rehabilitation (RCTRACK and GUIDE - Rehab ) and contributing to the development of intervention packages that are part of the WHO working group "Rehabilitation 2030 call for action".
Finally, the keynote lecture by the writer William Ospina from Colombia was very interesting, where he described miscegenation as a historical form of cultural enrichment of the different nations of Latin America. Metaphorically, a parallel can be established with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, considered as a crossbreeding of all medical disciplines.
On the other hand, we would like to highlight the symposium dedicated to cerebral palsy, especially early care, care in the Colombian rural environment and the transition to adult life. In addition, another symposium was held on the treatment of spasticity in acquired brain injury, organized jointly with the Ibero-American Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Regarding the treatment of spasticity, Dr. Gerard E. Francisco from the United States, a professor at the University of Texas, provided an up-to-date summary of all spasticity treatments and management worldwide, mentioning shock waves as an exploratory resource and innovation
