School psychology and multiple disabilities

As professionals in school psychology, the main work objective is to prioritize the mental health and the harmonious and global development of students, as well as to provide parenting support to their families and specialized advice to the various teams that attend to them.

Participate in educational attention towards development, from the first stages of life, to detect and prevent any disorder of the own and characteristic development of students with multiple disabilities, cerebral palsy and other developmental pathologies.

Psychoeducational assessment referring to the assessment of personal and group capacities, in relation to educational and therapeutic objectives, as well as to the analysis of the functioning of educational situations (multidisciplinary teams). Linked to this process, the psychologists propose and/or carry out interventions to improve the educational skills of the students, the educational conditions and the development of solutions to the possible difficulties detected in the assessment.

The task of the psychologists is to attend to the different needs that are detected in the students within an internal and multidisciplinary work, which wants to offer global care. The tasks are defined in two major areas of action: those related to evaluation and those related to direct attention.

The techniques used in the assessment are the psychological interview (individual, family...), direct observation, psychological tests (selecting the most appropriate in each case) and coordination with multidisciplinary groups, as well as the coordination with other services that serve the student.

In relation to direct intervention, it is important to be present in all classroom groups during the week, at least for 1 hour 30 minutes.

The main areas of work are:

  • Attention, from the clinic and psychopedagogy, to students aged between 3 and 21 years.
  • Attention to families, which begins with the first reception, where the psychologists make an analysis of the family and personal situation of the students, regardless of the age of access to the center. This analysis is complemented by the necessary coordination with other services such as the EAP, the educational centers of origin and others. Provide therapeutic support to families, through therapeutic interviews, in order to achieve criteria and tools for joint action. It highlights the importance of accompanying families throughout their school career.
  • Advice to multidisciplinary teams. In terms of overall attention, the psychologists accompany the student throughout their schooling, guaranteeing knowledge of their evolution, and that of their family, throughout this period and facilitating their professional work of the various school groups (classrooms).
  • The implementation of individual and/or group psycho-pedagogical support treatments, in order to attend to the psychological needs of those students who require it.
  • The preparation of psychological reports aimed at the professionals of the educational center, as well as at families and other referral centers (CTO, CET, PFI...).
  • External coordination (Residential centers, Social Services, Ordinary schools, Institutes, hospital centers, CSMIJ, Palliative Care Team...), aimed at making a global analysis of the state of the students during their schooling.
