History of the Aspace Special Education School

The ASPACE Catalunya Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1961 and declared a charitable-social association in 1964, as well as considered of public utility in 1968. ASPACE was born when a group of parents with children affected by cerebral palsy decides to set up as an association to promote a portfolio of services dedicated to research, diagnosis, treatments, rehabilitation, education, promotion and support for people with cerebral palsy or other developmental pathologies, as well as their families. The primary objective was for every person with cerebral palsy to obtain a maximum level of normalization, a greater degree of personal, motor and mental autonomy and a higher level of integration into society.

As a result of the work of these parents and after a long journey, in 1961, the Archangel Sant Gabriel Pilot Center was founded and a specific external consultation service for people with cerebral palsy. In 1966, the ASPACE Special Education School was created with the aim of promoting and stimulating the global development of all the capacities of children with special educational needs and achieving greater family and social integration. The school is registered in the register of Educational Administration Centers and enjoys an educational concert with the Generalitat de Catalunya.

For many years, this has been the only and first care center for cerebral palsy in Spain, dedicated to diagnosis and rehabilitation, where technical, rehabilitative and educational teams work in a coordinated and integrated manner to provide a global response to the needs of children with cerebral palsy.

Since its first steps, the entity has been transforming and evolving. In 2017, the entity was transformed from an association to a foundation and was registered in the Register of Foundations with registration number 3043. The school has grown together with the Foundation, expanding its services in order to respond to the needs of people with multiple disabilities, cerebral palsy and neurodevelopmental pathologies, as well as their families, throughout their entire life cycle.
